Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 8 – Second Movement – “Pathetique Sonata”

The Pathetique Sonata was written by Beethoven in 1798 when he was only 27 years old. It is the second movement of his Piano Sonata No. 8, and I would encourage you to seek out the other movements if you like this one.

Although not truly sad throughout the entire piece, this is such a beautiful piece of music that I just had to add it to the collection. I have been drawn more towards the piano pieces of late. I am a want-to-be guitar player, but have always loved the versatility and emotion of the piano.

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No 5, Adagietto

What a beautiful piece! Sad, and remorseful, the addition of this piece of sad classical music to this site brings me great pleasure. I hope that you enjoy this wonderful symphony written in 1901.

Stay tuned for more Mahler in future. I just love his work, and a lot of what he produced was very sad classical music indeed. So expect to find lots more on here!

Johann Sebastian Bach – Air on the G String

This, without a doubt, is one of my absolute favourite pieces of sad classical music. In fact, it is one of my favourite pieces of music from any genre and any era. I find this piece to be sad, but not desperately so. I can always feel true emotional energy when I hear this piece, and it always, always, sends shivers up my spine. I am a lover of the violin, and there are few piece to my mind that make the violin weep like this one does. I hope that you really enjoy this piece of sad classical music.
