Sergi Rachmaninoff: Prelude Op.3 No.2 in C-sharp minor

The sad classical music piece today is another by Sergi Rachmaninoff. This, ladies and gents, is about as good as it gets for emotional piano pieces in my opinion. I simply love this piece in every way. The passion and dark attitude of the piece is amazing. The delivery of those huge, heavy (can I say badass?) chords at the beginning of the piece with the suspenseful wait between each delivery gets my heart racing everytime. This is one of the first pieces composed by Rachmaninoff after he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1892. He was only 19 years old at the time!

I had not heard this piece for a long time, and then was pointed to it by a reader of sad classical music .com. As soon as I heard the opening chords it brought a flood of memories back from my university days. I have a friend I went to uni with (we are still good friends) that used to play this down in the music room of our college. I used to ask him to play this piece often while we were waiting for dinner to start in the cafeteria. I loved it then, and I love it now!

It would be interesting to hear from readers of any sad classical music pieces (or any song or piece of music really) that instantly brings back a flood of memories whenever you hear it. In my humble opinion, this is one of the true magical beauties of music. Something that can bring back such strong, vivid images, smells and feelings is something to be treasured. Let me know about your experience in the comments section below!

As always, I hope you have truly enjoyed today’s piece of sad classical music.

If you would like to purchase a CD of this track, I suggest the Rubinstein Collection from Amazon.com.

This piece changed my life. Rachmaninov’s music is one of the most beautiful things I know. Thank you for posting. By the way, his Elegy is maybe even more beautiful and Trio élégiaque No.2 certainly is the saddest, most chilling and mournful piece of music I’ve ever heard.
